| Tavernuzze.
From Florence, Porta Romana, going along Via Senese, crossing
through Galluzzo, it is possible to reach Tavarnuzze, in the
Commune of Impruneta, located on the outskirt of Southern
Florence at 6 km from the centre. The origin of Tavarnuzze
comes from "taverne", small taverns built here in
the Middle Ages. From the centre of Tavarnuzze, through Via
Montebuoni one can take the old Roman street leading to the
Scopeti bridge; almost at the top of the homonimous hill one
finds the facade of San Giuliano Hospital (Spedale), once
a meeting place for the hungry and homeless pilgrims. The
building was probably owned by the Vallombrosani of Montescalari.
In 600 the hospital lost its importance because the pilgrims
moved to the near Via Cassia. On top of the hill was the famous
Buondelmonti Castle, of which today only a few stones are
left. |
